A 2.2 million USD Avmed Centre
06th August 2021.EAC Secretary General, Hon. Dr. Peter Mathuki tours a regional centre for aviation medicine by Civil Aviation Safety & Security Oversight Agency (CASSOA) in Nairobi, Kenya.
Hon. Secretary General was received by KCAA Board Chair Eng. Joseph Nkadaayo, KCAA Director General Capt. Gilbert Kibe and the Executive Director of CASSOA Mr Emile Arao.
The centre is currently being constructed by the Republic of Kenya on behalf of EAC CASSOA at a cost of US$ 2.2 million. The core function of the centre is aeromedical safety oversight. During this tour, Hon. SG was accompanied by EACJ Judge President Justice Netsor Kayobera, ICAO ESAF Director Mr Barry Kashambo, CASSOA board member Eng. Chris Njenga and KQ Board Member Mr Philip Wambugu.
The Regional Centre for Aviation Medicine (CAM) was borne of the need for civil aviation authorities of EAC Partner States to access an aviation medicine facility that complies with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Medical Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs). The core function of the Centre is aeromedical safety oversight.
Functions of CAM
- Evaluate and ensure conformity or compliance with ICAO Standard and Recommended Practices (SARPs) and the EAC Regulatory Provision of the Partner States in the field of aviation medicine.
- Carry a Skills audit and develop a databank of Designated Medical Examiners in the region and aviation medicine by arranging basic, advanced and refresher training programmes.
- Establish a process for continuous review and update of the medical aspects of CAA (Personnel Licensing) Regulations to keep abreast with ICAO SARPs changes.
- Develop an appeal system for dissatisfied license holders.
